HEATH SLOCUM WINS BARCLAYS ON FINAL HOLE

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) -In a final hour of surprises, Heath Slocum delivered the biggest one Sunday at The Barclays.

One week after Slocum wondered if he would even make it to the PGA Tour Playoffs, he finished off a compelling afternoon at Liberty National by making a 20-foot par putt on the 18th hole for a one-shot victory over Tiger Woods and a cast of stars.

Woods was one shot behind when he fired a 6-iron from 189 yards into 7 feet on the final hole, adding to his collection of clutch shots. Typical of his week, however, Woods missed the putt and shot 67, then had to wait to see if there would be a playoff.

Y.E. Yang, a South Korean who didn’t take up the game until he was 19, became the first Asian player to win a major championship Sunday. And he took down Woods to do it.

“I usually go for broke,” Yang said through an interpreter. “The odds are against me. Nobody’s going to be really disappointed that I lose. So I really had nothing much at stake, and that’s how I played it.”

Beating Woods in a regular tournament would be a big enough shocker for a 37-year-old player who was in PGA Tour qualifying school just nine months ago. That he did it in a major is an upset so big it sent shock waves around the world.

Woods was 14-0 when he was atop the leaderboard going into the final round of a major. He had never lost any tournament on American soil when leading by more than one shot.

TIGER RALLIES TO WIN AT FIRESTONE

AKRON, Ohio (AP) – First came another signature moment from Tiger Woods, an 8-iron over the water that stopped a foot from the hole. Even more stunning was the meltdown that followed by Padraig Harrington.

In a swift turn of events on Firestone’s famous 16th hole, Woods went from one shot behind to a four-shot victory Sunday by closing with a 5-under 65 to win the Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods became the first player in PGA Tour history to win seven times on the same golf course.

It was his 16th victory in the World Golf Championship series, and the world’s No. 1 player now goes to the PGA Championship next week at Hazeltine with two straight victories after missing the cut last month in the British Open.

After nearly four hours in the tough battle that Harrington expected, he let it slip away in shocking fashion.

Woods left himself some 170 yards over the water, and his 8-iron landed near the pin and rolled back a foot away. Harrington hit from the collar of a bunker over the 16th green, but his flop shot came behind the green came out hot and into the water.

TIGER WINS BUICK BY 3

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP)—Tiger Woods has another trophy for his overflowing collection.

Woods shot a 69 Sunday and coasted to a three-shot victory with a 20-under 268 at the Buick Open for the 69th PGA Tour title of his career.

“This one feels good,” he said.

He improved to 36-1 when he has the outright lead after 54 holes. Woods has four wins this season—doubling the total of his nearest competitors—in just 11 starts since returning from knee surgery.

Roland Thatcher (64) briefly shared the lead at 17 under and finished tied for second with Greg Chalmers (68) and John Senden (70).
