Woods Withdraws from Tourney, Citing Injuries

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Tiger Woods withdrew Monday from his own golf tournament, citing injuries from a car crash near his Florida home. He said he would not compete again until next year.

Woods said in a statement on his Web site that his injuries prevented him from playing in the Chevron World Challenge, which he hosts annually for a small, invited, field.

“I am extremely disappointed that I will not be at my tournament this week,” Woods said. “I am certain it will be an outstanding event and I’m very sorry that I can’t be there.”

His decision to withdraw comes after a car crash left him with cuts and bruises when his SUV hit a fire hydrant and a tree at 2:25 a.m. Friday outside his home in an exclusive, gated community near Orlando. Woods was treated and released from a hospital after the accident, and has not been seen in public since.

By skipping the tournament, Woods will escape having to face TV cameras and a horde of media seeking more details about the smashup. The tournament was to be the last of the year for Woods anyway, but he did not say just when he would make his return next year.

PALM HARBOR — The celebratory champagne shower likely felt even sweeter for Sherri Steinhauer.

Steinhauer, 46, won the LPGA Legends Tour Open Championship on Sunday at Innisbrook by three strokes over Allison Finney, finishing at 3-under 141 in her first tournament in more than a year.

It was emotional for Steinhauer, who thought her career was over when chronic hip problems forced her to have two surgeries in the past 10 months.

“I’m absolutely shocked, because I honestly didn’t know that if I’d ever play golf again,” Steinhauer said. “So I’m just really happy to have even competed. To win just feels … it’s amazing, like a miracle, really.”

Why is nobody talking about Tiger throwing his club

Teflon Tiger

Why is nobody talking about Tiger Woods throwing his driver into the crowd at the Aussie Masters? Maybe his people made a request.

Dear friends,

As I’m sure many of you are aware, we had an unfortunate incident in Melbourne on Saturday where Mr. Woods mis-hit his tee shot due to a father taking pictures of his daughter in their front yard about a mile from the course during Mr. Woods’s swing. Following this gross breach of etiquette, Mr. Woods was understandably frustrated. Because of his intense focus and concentration, Mr. Woods didn’t realize that he had flung his club into the ground whereupon it bounced up and flew into the crowd.  Because of Mr. Woods’s stature and your position as reporters, we realize that it must be tempting to relate this incident to the world at large. However, we’d like to remind you that Mr. Woods occupies an exalted position in the golfing world, and it is of the utmost importance to the game that his public persona remains unblemished. In fact, if Mr. Woods were subject to criticism for this incident he would consider demanding that Tour events in which he deigns to participate be played at dawn and be closed to all media and fans except a small group of celebrity athlete friends. Don’t believe it? Just try us.

We appreciate your cooperation in the matter. In exchange for your silence on the unpleasantness in Australia on Saturday, Mr. Woods might acknowledge you by name at some future date. He will also consider saying something noteworthy at a future media conference. If you need to file a story this week, we’d be happy to provide you with quotes from Mr. Woods about the new Gillette Fusion Razor. It really is the future of shaving.

Warmest regards,

Tiger Woods Inc.

Tiger’s legacy will last for years to come

Golf Australia boss Stephen Pitt believes the full spin off from “Tiger hysteria” which swept the country last week would be be felt for some years.
The immediate benefits of having the game’s greatest player win the Australian Masters at Kingston Heath on Sunday will be quickly gauged by TV ratings, website hits, equipment sales, player registrations and rounds played.
But the full impact, according to Pitt, will not really be felt until young kids, inspired by watching Woods, take up the game in their thousands.
Pitt said one young spectator summed up watching Woods better than anyone could, describing the experience as like “seeing a superhero come to life in front of your eyes”.
