Bubba Watson really wanted to play well at the Travelers Championship to impress U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin.
He did.
Watson overcame a six-stroke deficit Sunday to force a playoff with Pavin and Scott Verplank, then beat Verplank with a par on the second playoff hole.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Perhaps the most appropriate scene that reflects what took place Sunday at the 110th U.S. Open was not the celebration hug that Graeme McDowell received from his father Kenny on the 18th green at Pebble Beach, an embrace that lasted only a few seconds but produced a flood of emotions and a lifetime of memories.
It was not Dustin Johnson searching for his lost tee shot in some nasty rough under a tree somewhere in the general vicinity of the third fairway. In the midst of a meltdown of near-historic proportions, Johnson failed to find his ball within the five-minute rule — someone found it 19 seconds too late — and failed to replicate the kind of spectacular golf that had set him up with a three-shot lead after 54 holes.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Lee Westwood has played golf long enough to be philosophical despite all the times he’s come up short when so very close to victory.
The Englishman who finished second at the Masters, lost a playoff in Dubai and finished tied for fourth at The Players Championship this year won the St. Jude Classic for his second career PGA Tour victory and first since 1998, beating Swede Robert Karlsson on the fourth hole of a sudden-death playoff Sunday.
“You try to do the right thing all the time,” Westwood said. “It doesn’t always work for you. I’ve been in contention a lot, especially this year, and I suppose I got a break today with other people’s misfortune but made the most of it and took a chance.”

Justin Rose joined the English revival in golf on Sunday, rallying from a four-shot deficit to win the Memorial with a flawless final round for his first victory in seven years on the PGA Tour. It was the second straight year the Memorial winner came from four shots behind. Tiger Woods did it a year ago, and the 29-year-old Rose was equally impressive. He played bogey-free at Muirfield Village for a 6-under 66 and a three-shot victory over Rickie Fowler.
