McDowell comes from behind to upstage Woods

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Graeme McDowell capped a dream season Sunday by doing something no one has ever seen.

In winning the Chevron World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club, McDowell, the U.S. Open champion and Ryder Cup hero, upstaged Tiger Woods by becoming the first player to beat Woods when he had a lead of at least three shots going into the final round. With stunning birdie putts of 22 and 25 feet on the 18th hole — the first to get into a playoff, the second to end the first playoff in the event’s history — McDowell denied Woods his last chance to win a tournament this season.

McDowell closed with a 3-under-par 69 to finish regulation at 16-under 272 in a tournament featuring 12 of the top 21 players in the world. Woods, who was playing in the final group in the final round for the first time in nearly 13 months, closed with a 73 and then missed a 15-foot putt to extend the playoff. He looked like the Woods of old in the first three rounds and took a four-shot lead into the final round. But his lead was cut to one after four holes, and he fell behind by two when he made double on the 13th before he rallied to force a playoff.
